Shopping for Winter Clothes in June
Why I'm shopping for a coat during summer. Plus: Rolex's Boom Boom Daytona watch culture is an odyssean journey through time (and Paris soccer history).
What Caught My Eye is a daily column about internet culture, people you should know about, business, shopping, and fashion.
Hello everyone, happy Monday. This morning I received an email from the brand AMI inviting me to a digital sample flash sale of unsold stock. I have a couple of things from them already, most notably a quilted puffer jacket that I bought at one of their sample sales 4 years ago for $150. I knew what I needed (and when I say need, I mean NEED). I was in desperate need of a winter coat.
Why am I shopping for winter clothes in June? If you’ve been following this newsletter, you know that I’ve been on the stakeout for a car coat ever since last fall.
I’ve been surviving off a Moncler windbreaker, a black midi Acne coat, a leather jacket, a Burberry scarf, and layers come the cold season. It doesn’t really get as freezing cold in Paris as it does in New York anyway, but a guy needs to always have a good winter coat in check. Ditto, ladies!
Moreover, I don’t really shop a lot in general, and I prefer to have a few well-edited pieces from brand I am investing in for the long-term, rather than a splurging closet of Shein or H&M that pill and lose their shape after the first wash. It’s just a personal preference. Quality first.
I clocked a coat from Ami over the fall that I shared with you on multiple occasions. You can find the double-breasted version in this edit. And here is a summery version from Miu Miu that fits the vibe.
I almost bought it over the fall, but decided to hold off given it’s $1,000 price tag. It was eventually marked down to $600, but I decided to hold tough in my position. I was hoping the day would come that I’d again have a long coat. I don’t even remember what happened to my previous long wool coat; a brand-less beige number that I had purchased off vintage ages ago.
When I got the email today, I said to myself: if it’s there, I’ll get it. And so it was.
I found a never-worn Fall-Winter 2022 knee-length grey Ami coat that retails at $900 for just a little over $200, and I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
Why am I sharing this with you? Because life is filled with things we need, and things we want. A good coat to keep you warm during the winter months is a necessity. I deeply believe in shopping within your means, and shopping for quality. I have a wish list full of garments I both want and need, and in building a wardrobe, a winter coat is a garment that is worth the investment. It can be worn everyday, and it fits within the description of a wardrobe basic.
While it does feel a little silly to shop for fall during the summer months, I invite you to have an eye out for sales of things you NEED. June is a great time to take stock of what you will need to fulfill your dressing needs from now until the end of the year. Believe it or not, we are at the halfway mark of 2025. It all goes by so fast!
Basic summer dressing is really easy. Often times, a white t-shirt and jeans will do. It’s a good time to let go of the heaviness, and bring in a fresh dose of long-term perspective into your wardrobes.
