Hello everyone,
For today’s letter, I rounded up some of the most viral moments (and favorite new brands) from NYFW. There’s no better time to jump on a new brand’s bandwagon than when it first emerges into the limelight, is still a hive full of style ideas at good prices, and starts getting financial backing from tastemakers to scale up.
Fashion month is in full swing, with London, Milan and Paris to follow. Subscribe if you want my coverage sent directly to your inbox. I promise I won’t hound you with the news everyday (unless it’s absolutely necessary).
This week I sent my review for the Calvin Klein show. The brand is finding its footing in the luxury market again. Since 2016, it’s focused on it’s beauty and sportier verticals. The challenge now is capturing customers in a saturated quiet luxury market. In order for the brand to carve out it’s way forward, Veronica Leoni will have to innovate what minimalism can be for the future of American style. The Fall Winter 2025 collection was a step forward at repositioning Calvin. Here’s the report in case you missed it.
I caught up with the friend that spurred the ‘A Really Clean Look’ story. He shared with me his insider thoughts (don’t shoot the messenger):
“I hated the shoes. It just wasn’t super exciting. Very bland, which is very Calvin. It was underwhelming after all the fuss they made about returning to the runway. Did you see the CK One clutch?” —anonymous Calvin Klein insider.
I argued it could make for a cheeky lunch time martini flask.
Viral Jeans and Piles of Layering
Kendrick Lamar’s Celine Bell Bottoms go viral. To get the look, start-off with these Levi’s 517 Bootcut jeans. For a more relaxed version, try these 567’s (also from Levi’s). If you want to get Kendrick’s $1,200 Super Bowl jeans, here they are. When I worked at Celine, I sold them, so I have a soft spot for them. He adorably posted the story on his personal Instagram (@hedislimane). The latest rumours surrounding Hedi are he’s going to Gucci. And he’s reportedly bought a house in Milan.
Opinions vary on whether this would be a good business move. On one side, it would power Gucci to relevance. Hedi Slimane is a wizard when it comes to running an Omnichannel business—when I was at Celine, his leather Triomphe belts sold like croissants on a Saturday morning.Puck’s Lauren Sherman said, “since he only sticks around at a brand for about 5-7 years, it would be like putting a band aid on a wound.” True, it would help the brand stop haemorrhaging sales for a period of time. But the issue is it wouldn’t entirely set it off in a new direction that’s sustainable in the long term.
