What Caught My Eye is a new daily column about pushback.
Hello everyone, happy hump day. I need to get a haircut this weekend and I’ve been thinking of the products I’ll be needing for my hair. I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to haircare, the only thing that really works for me is Kérastase’s Oléo-Relax shampoo and Christophe Robin’s sea salt scrub. It smells great and leaves the scalp squeaky clean.
I always like to have an eye out for what is going on with hairstyles. The honchos in Paris are sporting the mullet and sideburn fades à la Australian bum. I recently saw a fashion editor in Paris dawn the clips and accessories trend, with bobby pins and flowery clips to accent the hairdo. And since Brigitte Bardot, there’s always the mop with a bang, or the slicked-back pony.
I’ve been digging around the return of beige amongst the super rich. There are days when I want to embrace colors and stripes and studs and chains. Then there are days when I am happy to blend in, or wear full black, and on those days a little summery beige helps sidestep the Daft Punk in me. Personally I’m a big fan of the tan suit. I recently read
’s substack which has a great find on a summer suit. He’s got really good style.Turns out the beige moment is part of a larger trend—where short break cookies are in flavor. Usually up for a little more color, the current tendency with Ermenegildo Zegna clients is to opt for whites, beiges, and greys for a look that reads “super discreet and doesn’t want to be seen.” Still, a tan suit remains eye catching, as does playing with lengths.
The idea is having a restful, luxe, uncontroversial wardrobe, notes the Times, who cites baby food, or tea cookie colors like latte, oatmeal, cream, butterscotch, or café au lait to fit the moment. There’s something suave about it.
But I always like a little grunge to go with the zing, and for that I’m all about the Prada belt bag. It’s both clean and edgy. Let’s get to it.
WCME: Emily Ratajkowski’s Bad Haircut
Chopped bangs! On the side of the head!
“The main thing is it’s not me, you know?”, says Ratajkowski on TikTok. “I have bangs on the back of my head. Is it giving member of The Dare? Is it giving Karen O? Is it giving Italian?”
These days, it feels like everything comes with a side helping of risk when we’re out shopping (or getting a do-up). Emily Ratajkowski has been blogging her haircut as part of Kérastase’s new hair campaign. The caveat, however, is that she got a bad haircut.
The hairdresser gave her side British rock bangs. Amidst the chaos of unruly hair, her blogs touch on the fun of playing with a look. And that Kérastase will leave a blank slate for you to play with a new look. It’s consistent messaging in risk-averse times.
Will hair get bigger, or will it remain tame is the question of the day. But what’s important (and what stuck out me to me about the campaign) is the willingness to play with more options outside the conventional. In conservative times, creativity can always take the lead.
Have a good day!
