What Caught My Eye is a new daily column about pushback.
Hello everyone, and thank you for following along with me this week. I wrote about Vanity Fair’s search for a top editor, Blue Origin’s all-female flight crew to orbit, and Hair.
When I launched this column last week, I started writing about the volatility of the hemline. Here’s why. And here is another example. I just think the look looks incomplete AF. I’m all about simplicity, but the super cuff trend feels stuffy.
After all, it’s all about what you do with your hands. So I went through the style vortex to pick out ways in which denim has been worn over the years from photographers worth knowing featuring a cool host of brands.
WCME: Denim Hour
American Rebellion

In 1977, Herb Ritts captured Richard Gere as a modern American hero—launching both their careers. One photo cemented Gere’s star power and gave editors the urgency to change the narrative of high-fashion magazines.
Here the ruggedness of a Levi’s jean and tank meets the power of a desert boot. It’s all in the details. The fit is complete with a thin crocodile embossed belt by Saint Laurent.
Culottes and the ‘70s

Is it just me, or does it feel like influence from the ‘90s, ‘80s, and ‘60s has been around forever? Some days it feels like everything I read relates to those epochs in history. When will the page flip?
One of the best decades out there was the 1970’s (in my opinion). It’s just one of those decades everyone wishes they had been in. That and the 2000’s when everything suddenly changed again. And the fashion period became all about digging into yourself.
TWP has a really fun ruffle top can be dressed up or down. Ditto L’AGENCE’s denim jacket. The moment calls for a little more fun than usual—style with a chain belt.
Take it from here

When I came across the Irving Penn photo featured above, I knew I had to include it in this edit. It may be from the ‘60s but something about it feels incredibly fresh. The best raw denim comes from Japan, and I’ve got you covered with Momotaro.
The secret with raw denim is not washing it. The pant will adapt to your body as you wear it, developing its own creases and wear. Consider it your second skin. I toss mine in the freezer for cleaning. If you do wash it, it only needs to go in the machine for a few minutes and air dry.
This year is Ralph Lauren’s Hamptons year, and as the weather turns up, cable-knits are in season. I like to style mine with a baseball cap and Church’s lace ups.
New Millenia Flappers

As the new millennium arrived, the minimalism of the ‘90s took a sharp twist. For an exciting few years fashion embraced the back flap pocket denim trouser. True Religion was all the rage into the aughts. And now they’re making a comeback.
